The Back Thing is a simple, effective and portable solution for lower back pain. Designed by a neurosurgeon and subsequently patented, this Back Thing Traveler Version is perfect for both the home or the office, and fits on any seat. Designed to be even more lightweight and compact than the original, the Back Thing Traveler is purpose-built for when you're on the go. If you're crammed into an airline seat or stuck on the train, this is the relief you've been waiting for. Supple pine slats support your spine in a way foam and pillows cannot. The Back Thing is a protective postural aid that is portable and light weight; you can easily take it with you anywhere. The Traveler version also folds to make it smaller when carrying it.

Customer Comments (feedback to The Back Thing corp):
I was skeptical at first, but have been pleasantly surprised by the support that I get from the The Back Thing. I typically sit a lot for my job. By the afternoon, my back feels it. I have used The Back Thing for the past two months and have experienced less pain as a result. I think it is because I get consistent support in the right places. Other support products move around a lot.
 Jane T., Lexington, MA

Commuting by train to work places a strain on my lower back. I typically sit for 3 hours daily round trip and really feel it when I get home. The Back Thing has been a nice addition to the commute. I like the fact that it folds for easy placement in my briefcase too.

 Peter F., Baltimore, MD

I use mine every time I sit in my office chair. It functions almost exactly like the lumbar support feature you find in a luxury automobile. In the past I had slipped a pillow back there as a stopgap measure. The pillow method is a very weak substitute for The Back Thing.
 Stephen J., Stratham, NH

How Can I Tell It's Working?
Most commonly, it takes 3 to 5 days of use to be able to experience the benefits of this aid. Usually what is most noticeable is the discomfort that returns when the Back Thing is no longer used. Another indication of its effectiveness is that the product return rate is nearly zero, even after several years of production.
Scientific studies have been conducted which support the effectiveness of the Back Thing (initially named the Flat-Back). One study, the Culver Program, conducted at the Health Center involved 184 employees. 97% found the aid useful in pain relief. A followup conducted, 18 months after the initial review, found that 90% were still using their Back Things.

How Does It Work?

Technically, the Back Thing protects you from the pain associated with excessive lumbar lordosis (curvature) which is usually the result of poor posture from improper seating position. The general perception of how one should sit may not be the best for the spine.

In a study researchers asked patients to assume three different sitting positions: a forward leaning position, an upright 90-degree sitting position; and a "relaxed" position where they leaned back at 135 degrees while their feet remained on the floor.

The researchers then took measurements of spinal angles and spinal disk height and movement across the different positions.

Disk movement was found to be most pronounced with a 90-degree upright sitting posture. It was least pronounced with the 135-degree posture, suggesting less strain is placed on the spinal disks and associated muscles and tendons in a more relaxed sitting position. When they looked at all test results, the researchers said the 135-degree position was the best for backs, and say this is how people should sit. The Back Thing helps you to maintain a "relaxed" sitting posture which will take strain off of your back's lumbar region.
